Kane misses out on first trophy as Bayern lose in DFL-Supercup
Harry Kane missed out on winning the first trophy of his career after his Bayern Munich side lost 3-0 to RB Leipzig in the DFL-Supercup on Saturday.
Kane, 30, made his debut for Bayern as a second-half substitute against Leipzig, with his move to the Bavarian club only confirmed on the morning of the game.
Bayern posted pictures of Kane training with his new Bayern team-mates later on Saturday and it had been thought there was a chance the England captain might start the match, but it was 18-year-old Mathys Tel who led the line instead.
Leipzig’s Dani Olmo scored twice in the first half, though, to leave Bayern trailing at the break. Head coach Thomas Tuchel then made three changes for the second half, with Kim Min-jae coming on for Matthijs De Ligt to make his Bayern debut after signing from Napoli earlier this summer. Noussair Mazroui and Kingsley Coman came on for Benjamin Pavard and Konrad Laimer, who was also making his first appearance for Bayern after leaving Leipzig at the end of last season.
Kane was sent to warm up at the beginning of the second half, with the striker attracting huge applause from the Bayern fans at the Allianz Arena.
He could not, however, prevent his side from suffering a defeat in their first match of the season, with Olmo completing his hat-trick from the penalty spot just a few minutes after the former Spurs man came on midway through the half.
Kane never won a trophy during his 12-year career at Tottenham, with the closest he came being the two defeats suffered in the 2015 and 2021 League Cup finals.
The victory gave Leipzig their first-ever DFL-Supercup win. Bayern had won the trophy — which is contested between the winner of the Bundesliga and the winner of the DFB-Pokal — in six of the last seven seasons.
Kane could make his Bundesliga debut on Friday, when Bayern travel to Werder Bremen in the season opener.
